How Co-ordinated Investigation Progams work

CIPs are intended to work to a three-step procedure. The aim is that the programme remains under the control of the proposer(s) with the IHY CIP process providing a means of publicising the proposed work, co-ordinating access to and use of the necessary resources, and a forum for discussing the results. The figure below illustrates the process:

Propose A researcher proposes activities with specific science goals, requiring multiple resources not necessarily under his or her control. This is done using a form on this website, where there is also a list of CIPs proposed so far.   Coordinate IHY Discipline Coordinators review the proposal to co-ordinate with other CIPs and to link the proposer with representatives for instruments, observatories, and models. The Proposer and facility representatives arrange the details of observation modes, schedules etc. and do the work.   Review IHY Universal Process Workshop Planners identify relevant CIPs to start planning summary workshops. These will happen towards the end of 2007 and into 2008, and provide forums for drawing together and reviewing the results from IHY science.
